dizzy earth strap
Does anyone know where I can get a replacement for the little earth strap that joins the points to the dizzy body? Mine is badly corroded and is the likely cause of a misfire problem.
Cheers

Of course, you could just make one out of a bit of wire - as a temporary fix it should prove if that's your problem or not.

Earth Strap
Hi there,
I wonder if someone could give some advice. I hit a bloody great big pot hole in the road last night (what's road tax for) in my 99 Mini Cooper and imediately the engine died. When I tried to start it again the engine wouldn't turn over.
The recovery guy who came to take me home was a bit of a mini enthusiast and suggested that it was likely to be the earth strap had come loose and I could probably repair it myself in the daylight.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure what I'm looking for and whereabouts on the right side of the engine I might be looking.
Anyone got a photo or give me some advice.
cheers
Phil

Not sure about your particular car, but a common place is going from the bottom of the clutch housing (which is to the left as you look at the engine from the front) to the subframe adjacent to it. It's most likely thisthat has gone.
Some people also put a strap from the engine block, usually through the stabiliser bolt, to the bulkhead, usually one of the bolts holding the clutch master cylinder. Two straps are a good idea, for obvious reasons!

The engine earth strap is usually attached to the top engine stabiliser bar at both the engine end and clutch housing end?
Also check that the fuel cut-out switch doesn't need pressing because it's possible that the system was fooled into thinking that the pot hole was a crash and has tripped.
So press the little black button that you'll find on the rear/right side of the engine bay.

cheers Taffy,
It was indeed the engine cut off-switch and we're back on the road again.

Where do I put the earth strap?
Can someone help? I've just put the engine back in my 998cc 1987 Mini and stupidly didn't note the two points where the earth strap connects. Does one end go under the tie bar? What about the other end? Thanks.

One end goes to where the tie bar bolts to the rear bulk head, the other to where the tie bar bolts to the engine.

replaced battery earth strap
Thanks for the replies.
I bought myself a new earth lead (http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?ty=pb&pid=35306&title=BATTERY%20EARTH%20STRAP%2012) and fan belt. So far I have only replaced the earth lead (including cleaning the both and the connection to the chassis), cleaned up the positive connection to the battery and given the battery a good charge. The new earth strap was a big improvement - it gave a good tight connection - well worth £3.11. Since I did this, the starting has been much more positive. However, it has been sitting outside over Christmas, largely unused and covered with frost - the big test will be starting on Monday morning, and how it copes next week!
Happy new year!

Batteries
Check the engine earth strap, commonly missed, worth checking before you look at the alternator

Electrical Problems
try removing the earth strap that is mounted on the engine stabelizer, clean with sand paper under the head of the nuts and bolts/ both sides of the washers and the earth strap eyelets, and where the strap locates body and engine stabelizer bracket, clean the threads with a cloth, also do the battery earth strap in the boot.
